Global Chat: Diablo IV is an MMO, change my mind

Besides melting GPUs, ejecting colors into the sun, and being more grim than your unapproving Aunt Kelka, Diablo IV’s becoming known for actually being more of an MMORPG than first suspected. And we did suspect it a tad.

Tales of the Aggronaut makes a case for Diablo IV’s inclusion into the genre: “While this maps pretty closely to Kadala and Blood Shards from Diablo III, the gaining of factions with groups of NPCs and the collection of alternate currencies are absolutely things that I primarily associate with MMORPGs.”

Less than inspirational!

The Ancient Gaming Noob is less-than-thrilled at CCP’s blockchain EVE game announcement: “I don’t even know what to say, aside from the fact that this will fail like every blockchain scheme has failed so far. CCP can’t even make a second successful video game, so saddling any idea with blockchain nonsense seems like a double guarantee for failure.”

Words Under My Name completed Destiny 2’s newest legendary campaign: “We tore through the entire campaign over two nights, only stopping so that I could go to bed. Loading into the first mission, I thought we were in for a world of pain, but little did I know that it’d be us dishing it out instead.”

Inventory Full explored one of EverQuest II’s more interesting server rulesets: “Dragging out that creaky old metaphor one more time, Isle of Refuge is the Hotel California of servers; you can check in but you can never leave. The reason for the lockdown is the Free Trade ruleset. Isle of Refuge allows almost everything to be bought and sold, including all kinds of Look-at-me! Aren’t-I-amazing? items.”

MMOQuests.com returned to Wurm Online to find a whole lotta maps: “Novice maps have 2-3 clues associated with them, and – I am horrible at figuring them out. So horrible that both times I attempted to find my treasure, I got insanely lost.”

Going Commando ranked all of SWTOR’s 33 planets from best to worst: “Another disgusting swamp world, but this one doesn’t even have much story going on, has no repeatable content whatsoever, and felt small and weird even at launch. I also hate that you have to pick up the planetary storyline on every single character to even be able to travel to the surface.”

Priest with a Cause examined the growth of WoW Classic’s Classic Era servers: “In the guild it’s been noticeable that we’ve started to actually see raids fill up — we used to permanently under-man everything, but in recent weeks we’ve actually had instances of having to ask people to sit out on Molten Core or Naxx runs, which just feels wild.”

Every day there are tons of terrific, insightful, and unusual articles posted across the MMO gaming blogosphere — and every day, Justin reads as many as he can. Global Chat is a sampling of noteworthy essays, rants, and guides from the past few weeks of MMO discourse.
