Make My MMO: The countdown to Elite Odyssey

This week in crowdfunded MMOs, we’re less than two weeks away from Elite Dangerous’ Odyssey launch, which means Chris did his final look-see in the alpha… on his stream, by popular demand, which ought to give you a pretty good understanding of whether you should buy it.

Meanwhile, Ashes of Creation raised eyebrows with plans to let new $500 backers into alpha, Zenith finally began its alpha after multiple delays, and Dreamworld provided one more round of popcorn drama – which is all Dreamworld is likely to ever provide, apart from a bunch of easy money for the devs.

Read on for more on what’s been up with MMO crowdfunding over the last few weeks, plus our roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’re following!

Yes, some crowdfunded MMOs most definitely do succeed. But others crash and burn, and you need to hear about the whole spectrum of games that sought your money early in exchange for the promise of input and transparency. And that’s exactly what Make My MMO does every Saturday. Help us keep ’em accountable, would ya?

Combat like it’s 1999. With kindergarten gameplay and Frontier’s signature shedload of bugs.

I just wonder who this is going to attract into the game. A shooter fan whose been hiding under a rock for 20 years and hasn’t seen the 100 better shooters on Steam?

I’m not personally bothering with Odyssey, although I’ve a horrible suspicion some close friends will end up gifting it me because they’ll want me to play it with them, and then I’ll have to deal with unwanted gift guilt…

It’s just a bland FPS bolted on as a separate game with all the usual FDev sins of pointless grind and repetitive basic mission structure, and a complete lack of curated, meaningful “personal narrative” again. The planetary surface exploration was laughable, and already the only new content has been gutted because yet another awful mini game in front of completing the same basic scan was so obviously awful even FDevs infamous Forum Dad fans couldn’t defend it. Also bugs. So, so many bugs. And it’ll be abandoned in a few months, maybe looked at again in 4 years like all prior “content”.

And of course, Engineering for weapons. If that doesn’t send a chill down your spine, you’ve yet to experience the pleasure that is ED Engineering.

I’ll get Odyssey but I’ll wait a bit for a few bug fixes first.
