Make My MMO: Anachronia canceled its $72K Kickstarter the day before it ended

Welcome back to Make My MMO, MOP’s long-running column where we keep track of crowdfunded MMOs, both brand-new titles just starting their campaigns and older games long past their fundraising.

The Kickstarter for indie survival MMORPG Anachronia was apparently canceled the day before it was meant to end, having raised only $43K of its $72K ask. Developers at Starcode Studios blamed the cancelation on undisclosed “concerns” with its marketing agency and said the “best course of action” would be to “cancel the campaign,” which it then did.

“This is not a decision we made lightly, but we strongly believe in being transparent and acting in the best interest of our backers and our project,” Starcode writes (we’re not sure how the confusing disclosure is transparent?). “While this marks a change in our approach, Anachronia is not going anywhere. We remain fully committed to its development and will explore better ways to move forward.”

Meanwhile, Stars Reach’s Kickstarter closed out with over $760,000 in crowdfunds raised, Chronicles of Elyria is still kind of a hot mess casting about with blame, Ashes of Creation teased its naval gameplay, Valiance Online’s comms have slowed to nothing, and we checked in on Camelot Unchained. Finally, Magic to Master, whose main claim to fame was a 2023 Kickstarter littered with fake testimonials from game websites (including MOP), actually made it to Steam early access; it’s been met thus far with negative reviews and a low population.

Read on for more on what’s been up with MMO crowdfunding over the last few weeks, plus our roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’re following!

Yes, some crowdfunded MMOs most definitely do succeed. But others crash and burn, and you need to hear about the whole spectrum of games that sought your money early in exchange for the promise of input and transparency. And that’s exactly what Make My MMO does several times a month. Help us keep ’em accountable, would ya?
