And that’s a wrap on this year in history! While everyone says farewell to 2022, here at TGA we’re always looking way back at the past to see where we used to be and how the MMO genre developed. This year we touched on the familiar (Ultima Online) to the obscure (Dark Eyes) to everything in between.

As is my custom, today I want to gift to you the updated comprehensive guide to date for The Game Archaeologist. Not only will you get every column that I’ve covered in the past but also all of the new pieces from 2022. So tuck in, learn a thing or two, and broaden your gaming horizons!

Wow.

Proto-MMOs from the 1970s and 1980s

MMOs from the 1990s

MMOs from the 2000s

MMOs that never launched

Miscellania

Believe it or not, MMOs did exist prior to 2004! Every two weeks, The Game Archaeologist looks back at classic online games and their history to learn a thing or two about where the industry came from… and where it might be heading.
