EA rushes to add more server capacity for Anthem’s overloaded VIP demo

72

Anthem’s VIP demo is live today, and everything is just fine! Well, maybe not. BioWare maybe doesn’t have quite enough servers for the massive influx of players diving in, meaning a lot of gamers are running into capacity problems and errors.

Fortunately, EA says it’s working on the problem. (Which it could not possibly have anticipated since it’s never, ever, ever run an online video game thingy before.)

Popularity is certainly among the better problems for an MMO to have, anyway.

Surprisingly, the Anthem Reddit right now is rather positive – and making copious use of spoilers/no spoilers tags to make sure nobody’s story is being ruined outright.

Let us know if you’re playing, would ya?

Here’s a recap of all our Anthem coverage to date!

Update
Maybe it wasn’t those servers after all?

Update
BioWare’s now got a new statement on what’s going on:

“The main issue impacting the Anthem VIP demo on PC and PS4 has been resolved. Anyone who has had an issue on those platforms should restart the game and attempt to join again. Our team is still working on fixes for some of the issues we’re seeing on Xbox One.”

Played for a good chunk of the weekend. Had the issues a lot of others did with infinite loading screens, some lost XP, occasional rubberbanding… still had a blast. It just feels really good. The fights are hard but “fair”, team work is really important, and the different javelins feel significantly different during play. I’m looking forward to them fixing the issues and hopefully have a solid launch at the end of Feb.

So other than connection issues, how is it? Can only buy this or Div2, and having a real hard time deciding.

Still cant get in.

10/10 loading screen simulator.

Uninstalled and playing MHW and Resi 2 instead – games that ACTUALLY work.

I give up. I havent been able to get into the game.

Server connection error (once it said I had been banned) +
95 % load screen bug.

Simply, not worth.

and this was the paid demo, let’s see what happens on 1st.

A lot of people looking forward to this despite fears of EA turning this into another lootbox nightmare. Obviously they gave out way too many invites for what they had in place, sony players where hurt the most. From what I have read this game is getting pushed out with the usual EA pressure and is in no way actually close to ready.

Resolved lol.. uh-huh and Monkeys May fly out of my bottom… (but probably won’t) that game is lagged and rubberbandy as FU** utterly unplayable in its current form the moment you step foot outside of Tharsis.

In the last 10 hours I managed to find around 30 minutes of unlagged play the rest was unplayable between constant issues logging in and trying to launch the game which apparently remains running despite being closed unless you close it in the task manager…. thank goodness its only a demo and not live or i’d be getting refunded already.

Finally got a chance to play and have some things to say. Heh.

I’ll wait a bit before I divulge.

What about? The controls? It’s a console port so yea, flying/swimming sucks for everyone not using controller (especially swimming in dark tunnels) ;-)

The bugs? Like the one that forces people to reload game when loading bar becomes stuck at 95%? ;-)

The way that game restricts people from exploring by telling “you can’t go that way, dude, get back or I’ll teleport you back in 10 seconds”? ;-)

Ok. Let’s talk about it.

Yup the 95 percent bug is horrible. Now, as this is just a demo, I won’t fault them for it too much. But that shit better be fixed before launch or it is a deal breaker.

Flying, oh my god. WTF? Lol. I will play with a controller if I have too, but I prefer a mouse and keyboard for the precision. Swimming, yeah same issue. I really hope that is something they are working on as we speak. Combat needs to smooth and seamless in this game. And that includes movement.

Yeah, and it isn’t quite an open world is it? A few missions in, I was in a situation where I could outflank the enemy if I scaled a rocky outcropping, so I tried it. Heh. Suddenly, there was a load screen and respawned and was put back where I started.

I really hope the story is great, btw. Otherwise, the quest hub is going to be a pain in the ass. And what’s with the slow jogging in there? Please let me get to the npcs quickly. I’m not admiring the graphics after I’ve already looked around.

Next, so… no chat in grouped missions? It would be nice especially when trying to solve puzzles.

Overall, the demo is fun. And I’m getting a good feeling that this is not MEA. It’s all still a little clunky at the moment in terms of movement and combat, but it is certainly a good entry in the online fps market and we haven’t seen the finished product yet.

It has VOIP options to handle the chat issue, you just have to turn them on in the game settings.

Cool. Didn’t see that.

No chat is due to US regulation requiring all games post Feb 2019 to have TTS/STT

What is TTS/STT?

I dunno about the flight part. It was squirrely at first for sure for me, but once I settled into the mouse flight … I found it to be really accurate and fast. Skimming over the water at full speed and comboing a ground melee strike felt really, really good. I really just want to unlock the Colossus, but I’m stuck at level 11 for eternity.

Put in a couple of hours. Really enjoying the game. Intrigued by the little story that I’ve been exposed to. Game is a joy to explore. Combat is tight and fun. Flying still squirrely. Had some rubberbanding issues towards the end. Will be playing this.

Flying is squirrely and wacky and scary too. There were a couple of times I went ballistic, literally, and then dropped like a rock screaming all the way down.

Damn good thing I’m not a streamer.

But seriously, there has to be a more intuitive way to handle flight. I hope they are working on that feverishly before launch.

Flight hasnt changed a bit from last test which is a little worrisome. I can fly ok but if there’s a situation that’s not forgiving I’m screwed with this flight model.

The Alpha in December ran a lot better than this demo. (performance wise)

My i7 7700, gtx 1070 system struggles to keep 45 fps on low settings in the open world. (textures on high, because low makes the game look like an N64).

In the dec alpha, i ran it on high to ultra settings and maintained 60 fps no problem.

Bioware clearly has some big issues they need to iron out… and quickly.
